Primary Activities: Horse packing, wilderness safety skills

Nights: 4 wilderness on horseback, 2 Camp Augusta

Traveling by horseback is an experience like no other; especially through pristine wilderness settings that are inaccessible by vehicle. You will have the opportunity to experience the peaceful sounds of hooves carrying you over backcountry trails to your next campsite. The camaraderie of this group will extend to people and horse companions alike as you learn to care for yourself as well as your steed from deep within the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

The trail will be led by Terry Howard of Sierra Nevada Adventures, with two CampAugusta counselors alongside. There is an opportunity to learn more advanced horseback riding skills and equine care as a part of the trip, and to learn general trail and backpacking etiquette. Forget about the modern world for a few days as you experience what pioneer life must have been like!

This horse packing trip is designed to bring in campers who want to learn many facets of partnering with horses, in a rustic atmosphere.  Learning will consist of the care, saddling and riding and will challenge them while having activities that are diverse enough to keep it interesting and fun for a variety of skill levels with horses.

By the end of the week Augusta Wilderness Counselors and our wranglers will have guided the campers along the trail as they enjoy and grow closer to our large 4 legged friends.

Daytime activities may Include:  Riding lessons, Horse safety classes, lead rope braiding, horse whispering demonstration, horse shoeing, cooking on an open campfire, natural and human history or the areas we ride, saddle pad washing, saddling lessons, dietary horse needs, trail maintenance, tack maintenance and repair, swimming, emergency trail safety, a horse washing day, personal logbook time, horse vetting and first aid, gold rush settlement exploration, and anything else can imagine
